Keeping Horses Comfortable During Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, horse owners naturally begin to worry about keeping their horses safe and comfortable during the warmer months. While we often think of horses as hardy animals, they can be just as susceptible to heat stress and dehydration as we are.

One of the greatest advantages of keeping horses in a natural herd environment is that they are able to make many of their own decisions about how to stay comfortable. Horses will often seek shelter during the hottest parts of the day, stand in the shade of trees, position themselves to catch cooling breezes, or rest quietly alongside their companions.

Fresh, clean water is essential during periods of warm weather. Horses can drink significantly more during hot spells, so water sources should be checked regularly to ensure they remain clean and accessible. Salt licks and appropriate electrolyte supplementation can also help support hydration in some horses, particularly those in work.

Fly management becomes increasingly important during summer months. While some horses appear relatively unaffected by flies, others can become stressed and uncomfortable. Fly rugs, masks and appropriate management strategies can all play a role, but allowing horses the freedom to move around and choose their environment can often make a significant difference to their comfort levels.

Owners should also be mindful of exercise routines during periods of extreme heat. Early morning or later evening exercise is often preferable, and horses should always be monitored for signs of overheating, including excessive sweating, lethargy, increased respiratory rate or reluctance to move.
