Why Summer Turnout and Herd Living Matter

Summer offers horses the opportunity to enjoy many of the behaviours they have evolved to perform naturally. Grazing, walking, social interaction and rest all form part of a healthy daily routine, and allowing horses to live within a stable herd environment can provide enormous benefits for both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Horses are social animals. In the wild, they would spend much of their lives within a herd structure, forming friendships, establishing routines and learning from one another. Domestic management systems that encourage safe social interaction can help reduce stress and promote more relaxed, contented horses.

One of the most fascinating aspects of herd living is observing how horses adapt to changing weather conditions.

During hot weather, horses will often move together into shaded areas, stand head-to-tail to help reduce fly irritation, or spread out across different areas of the field depending on their individual preferences.

Regular movement throughout the day also supports digestive health, hoof condition and musculoskeletal function. Unlike stabled horses, those living predominantly outdoors often cover several miles each day simply by grazing, socialising and exploring their environment.

For older horses and those in retirement, maintaining freedom of movement can be particularly beneficial. Gentle, consistent movement helps support joint health and can contribute significantly to maintaining condition and overall quality of life.

At Caplor Farm, our approach centres around providing horses with choice, companionship and the freedom to behave like horses. During the summer months especially, the benefits of this philosophy become abundantly clear as we watch our herds thrive in their natural environment.
